Food combining for fat loss – does it work?

Does food combining really help you lose fat? Many seem to think so, but how does it work?

Essentially the idea is that consuming certain foods along with each other boosts your fat loss. This is because your body is best able to digest certain nutrients when they are combined in a particular way. This would characterize many different diets.

Is it effective?

It is true that combining certain foods does work. In fact, often times the problem with certain diets is that they overload your system with an excessive amount of one nutrient or another, such as fat, carbs, etc. And they do so at the expense of others.

This prevents the body from digesting all of it properly. In fact one of the biggest issues with the “high protein diet” is that your body has nowhere to put all that protein. As a result it ends up using the unusable portion as body fat.

So what are the best foods to combine?

In general your goal should be to just eat a healthy and well spread out diet. Each meal should net you proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Consuming all of them at each meal is the key.

Don’t deprive your system of one nutrient or another. Also you might want to focus more on whole foods. Processed or refined foods don’t have the same nutritional value and are more difficult for your body to digest.

So am I saying you can eat an unlimited amount?

Of course not - it’s a known fact that the more calories you eat, the more weight you will gain.

But the key is not just eating less. Instead it’s eating heavier and more satisfying foods. This will keep you full for a longer time, which will help you reduce your overall food consumption.

While we are on the topic of digestion, you might want to eat four-six times a day as opposed to three. Eating fewer times has shown to slow down digestion and therefore increase fat.

So what’s the verdict about food combining?

It’s important, but don’t get carried away with it. The main thing is to just eat a well balanced diet of mostly whole foods.

Also don’t restrict yourself from any particular nutrient. Try and eat more filling foods to reduce your calorie intake as well. A good rule of thumb is to focus on getting fats, protein and carbs every meal.
